I invented this a few years back and have recently perfected it.
~~~~~Compound Ham & Cheese Disaster~~~~~
- high quality thinly sliced deli ham
- high quality thinly sliced your favorite cheese
- your favorite bread
- mayo (optional)
- frying pan
- fork
- spatula
- toaster (optional)
- mayo-spreading knife (optional)
Obtain a clean frying pan, pretty much any size.
Get the pan slippery, I use a shot of Pam, a spot of butter works too.
Get the pan hot, say about medium to low hot.
Drop a slice of ham in the pan, spread out not crumpled up.
Watch as it starts to bubble, spit, hiss, and crinkle up. Smells good, eh?
Once it's got a fair amount of brown spots and is wrinkly, but BEFORE it turns black, use a fork to flip it over to cook the second side.
***Keep a mental note of about how long it took!***
Drop a slice of cheese on the exposed newly cooked first side.
Spread out a new slice of ham on top of the cheese.
Once you've cooked the second side about as long as the first, use a spatula to flip the developing mess over to start cooking the new slice.
Of course, put another slice of cheese and more ham on top!
Continue adding layers (always ham-side-to-the-pan) and flipping over the increasingly sloppy and messy pile of hot ham and cheese, until you can't handle it anymore.
I usually toast my bread during this, and richly shellac it with mayo in anticipation.
Simply spatula the dripping mess onto your bread, let it cool for a second or two, and then chow. Feel the greasy goodness drip down your chin and chuckle to yourself, "What a disaster!"
If anybody stumbles upon some interesting variations, please post them.
Next time I'm going to add lettuce and tomato and use a big sliced crescent roll instead of my usual mega-wheat 99-grain colon-blow bread. |
