so i bought this deck,,,and the grip was all crazy cut, the guys name was spelled on it, plus some anime creature on it. And I am trying to regrip it....
I took off the grip, and theres a lot of residue...a lot...I have never really had such a mess on my hands, usually i can get it off one shot. so what would be the best stuff to get off the residue without waterlogging the deck? any suggestions please would be rad....also anyone know where to get brown or grey griptape?

I just took the grip off of a 20 year old stained deck. I used "Goo Gone", a wash clothe and a hell of a lot of elbow grease. It worked great. The stain under the grip looks like it did 20 years ago.

I did this just yesterday.

Here is what i found....

Carb and choke cleaner WILL get the paint. Stay away from that.

Awesome! Does nothing...

Zippo lighter fluid did the trick! It did nothing to the finish of the paint on my BONITE Hawk. try in an inconspicuos spot first;.. your paint may be a different type... but Zippo fluid worked excellent.

Squirt it on liberally and work it in with GLOVES on. (I have blisters from not using gloves)... You could also try using a soft rubber scraper.. you can find this in the autobody section of your local auto store..

Comes right off..

Hope it helps...

thanks guys, i am regripping it so i am not too worried about the paint, except the top graphic....both ideas sound good, ill go with the cheaper one--- probably lighter fluid...does the deck smell like shit after all that fluid?

nail polish remover works a treat on grip residue..

but it will remove paint fast, faster than an electrified fast paint removing machine.

plus the smell makes the world go happy.

Cut one of those green and yellow kitchen sponges into 1" wide strips, and just wrap it around your knuckle so you're scrubbing with the green side. You can get a hell of a lot of mileage out of one sponge that way.

Goo Gone has always worked the best for me. Don't leave it unattended, as it will eventually eat the paint, but not if used alertly.

Goof Off will eat paint like Cookie Monster on a bag of Chips Ahoy.

Others have mentioned eucalyptis oil (makes the house smell like a Kool smoking koala lives there, whether this is a good or bad thing is up to you) or peanut butter (no experience with this one).
