Somebody in the know -- how about a little history of skateboarding culture of Windsor Woods -- the scene, the skaters, you know -- the general historical lowdown on Windsor Woods?

My foggy recollections of the Woods are pretty much with the cats I hung with...yes, before Green Run High we all went to Plaza Jr. which is where I lived...in the Plaza! Most of my friends lived on Woodlake & Water Oak, etc... Criag, Bobby, Brian, Mike, John, Dana, Ceaser, Brad, Walker. Just a hodge podge of kids with plenty of time on their hands. Before Mike & Sergie were signed. The 'ol Days of the Thunder Bowl on Lynnhaven Pkwy. and the Trashmore Snake Run. Pulling the links out of the fences so we could skate whenever or bring our bikes in. And the Derby Run before the put up the many gates...what a great slalom course or death after skate wobbles! I really need to catch up with old friends and see if any pictures survived the Woods...that whole scene reminds me of an old Jim Carroll song, "People Who Died"...also, one thing that will always stay with me...a peice of Winsor Woods I just can't shake...my Wife! |

Kewl. I grew up near the Outer Banks in the days of Barney's Concrete Curl in Nag's Head (later doomed to be humiliated by having the tranny area converted to a bumper boat park!!!). When the folks went shopping in VA, we would be dropped at Trashmore or the Thunderbowl. There were always stories of rad backyard ramps all over VA Beach. Have some pics I took in 1977-78 of some of the old Barney's riders on a backyard halfpipe only eight feet wide popping air, handplants, tailtaps. Will have to scan and post them sometime. We rode some crazy shit back then. simshardcore, I know how you feel about the People Who Died thing, and it seems like when I look at my old pics a lot of them rode Sims Superply and Brad Bowman decks with those green Sims Snakes wheels. That shit was way popular on the East Coast in the late 70s. |

I can give a very detailed history of the WW. I was born and raised there and also an orginal fork burn boy. The scene started around 1980-81, when we would go to potter's raod ramp because there was no surf. The ramp was an old left over u-shaped ramp from the late 70's. We had a couple deck's from Henry and virgil and ceaser's brother etc. This was before crescini or any of us could even drop in. Since the waves really suck in VB, we started skating everyday and didn't waste time drivin down to check the surf. We started partying every night, playin good old punk and skatin every day. Lots of ramps going up every where in VB at this time. I use to pick up crescini and the G boys from plaza jr and go skate. then every ramp started getting busted by cops. No building permits and the city would not give one for a ramp. so we bitched to the city and they built trashmore. I got a job at the ramp and got paid to skate This is when sergie started showing up. He skated the little ramp behind the big ramp. I use to call him a pussy (He skated the little ramp really well) cause he wouldn't skate the "big" ramp. Finally he got on the ramp and maybe a week later he's blasted airs. He has such natural skating ability.
I can tell you many stories. We all did a couple trips to barney's concrete. I have a couple of old VB thrash zines with articles from those trips in them. Too much to write about
